STONE SOUP SUNDAY...

HAVE YOU EVER READ THE BOOK,  Stone Soup, by Marcia Brown?

"Never had there been such a feast! Never had the local peasants tasted such soup.”

First published in 1947, this picture book classic has remained one of Marcia Brown's most popular and enduring books. This story, about three hungry soldiers who outwit the greedy inhabitants of a village into providing them with a feast, is based on an old French tale telling how they outwit the villagers and find great places to sleep.

The soldiers start out with a stone for the soup.  The villagers are so enthralled with how someone can make a soup from a stone that they start adding their own vegetables, etc. to the pot.
In the 70's I was a librarian in the school system for 7 yrs. until a cut in funding did away with my job!!  I loved working in the library even back when we used the old card catalog instead of the computer like today.  I worked at different schools but the elementary schools were my favorite.  I began a collection of children's books when I was in college nights and still have them today.  My dream was to write and illustrate children's books and it is still one of my dreams....
But anyway, today I am cooking my version of stone soup, just meaning that whatever I have on hand goes into the pot!
Carrots
Golden Idaho Potatoes
Strip beef diced
Vidalia onion
Pepper, no salt (my hubby is on the kidney low or no sodium diet now)
Canned peas
Pasta

left over chicken soup from yesterday, 1 cup
I par-boiled the beef, then cubed it.
3 large potatoes
4 Carrots
1 slice Vidalia onion
  diced
par-boiled beef
  cubed

I added lots of Pepper since I couldn't use salt.

I simmered for an hour and 15 minutes.  The last 15 minutes is when I added the left over chicken soup and the pasta.  I served with bread and unsalted butter.  It came out thickened and luscious!

I hope you will try some of your own "Stone Soup" and add anything your heart's desire!  Hubby loved it and it is hearty enough to satisfy the men in your family!  Thanks for coming today and I do hope you were all kept safe from the hurricane!

 Hugs,

No I have never read that book, but it does sound interesting. I love making soup, especially when it starts getting cooler. I often make a big batch of vegetable soup (whatever fresh veggies I have on hand) and then add barley or lentils and then divide it and have some every day! I don't mind eating soup every day because it tastes good and is good for me. I don't put meat in it anymore since I discovered that pure vegetable soup stays fresher in the fridge than meat based soups...besides, I'm not into chicken and beef anymore. Once you don't eat it for a while, you lose your taste for it (I think) ... well, at least that's how it worked with me. Have a wonderful day and enjoy your soup!

So funny you should post about this!! We have a combination new and used book shop with a cafe in it, and it is called Stone Soup! They feature the story of the stone soup, and are in an old two story house downtown. You can browse through their books while you wait for your lunch or dinner, and on weekends they sometimes have musical entertainment. They have homemade soups and sandwiches, and they buy the ingredients locally.
